Was my site down all day or not?

I was not able to get here or any of my sites at all today. I couldn’t even SSH in. I was thinking it may be a DNS issue, so I logged in remotely to another computer system at work and tried to communicate to the Linux server via the internal network and I got no responses.

So I assumed the computer had some kind of issue, maybe hard locked or maybe completely lost power. I had to wait until my wife got home from work so I could go to the office and find out what was going on.

On the way to work, I was only thinking about how I don’t have recent backups and what if the machine is hosed. I was getting nervous.

When I got there, not only was the machine running, it seemed to have no problems what so ever. It was communicating to the Internet just fine. Just for kicks, I rebooted the server and our Internet router.

After it came back up, I was able to get to this site, so I checked out the refer logs, and it states that the site has been getting hits all day long. So what really was the problem?? Maybe just something with roadrunner DNS?? Why couldn’t I ping it from a machine that was on the internal network?

I have no idea, I’m just glad it’s back available to me. Now it’s time formulate a better backup plan.

Not really a podcast, but I’m posting it anyways. If you hate me because of it, well, at least it’s only a minute of wasted time.

Installed Ubuntu today and got it all configured, including install Audacity. Hooked the mixer up to it and did a test recording. Here is the results.

Question on Fedora

I’ve setup a workstation running Fedora Core 3 and am using it daily now. It’s been 3 days since I’ve booted in to Windows. I really shouldn’t have to unless I want to work on photos, or do some recording. But I have a question I can’t the answer to.

How do I tell YUM to use the Fedora development branch? Yeah, I like bleeeding edge!

TIA for any assistance!

Whacky weather

I know I mentioned this in the last two podcasts, but for those who don’t listen and for my own archiving, I’m adding an entry for this as well.

Last night around 8:30pm the temps outside were above 50 degree’s and we had a thunderstorm, complete with hail, lots of rain, and thunder & lightning. This morning, wake up to freezing temperatures and it’s been snowing all morning. Just whacky!

Another mobile edition. Only took three times to get a recording. File size is better on this one. Sorry about yesterdays. There is an annoying intermittent sound in this podcast, and thats coming from my cell phone.

Notes to self: Mobile Edition Checklist
1) Turn off cell phone before recording
2) Make sure mic power is on.
3) Make sure iRiver is actually recording

It’s so quiet in my house right now

It’s lovely! My wife is at work, and all three of my kids are taking a nap. I usually don’t make my son take a nap, but today he got in trouble just before I put his sisters down for nap and I sent him to his room. He played for a long time, but right now he’s sound asleep. All my kids are light sleepers so I fear making any noises as I want to enjoy this for as long as possible. :)

Here’s a sell for podcasts

I actually wish I had a longer commute so I could listen to more. Last Friday I was on the road for 2+ hours(kind of a rarity lately), and I was able to get all caught up. Maybe I’ll have to see if Kdawg can hook me up with a gig in downtown Chicago. That would give me 3 1/2 hours of commute time Mon – Fri.
