Easy remote control

We have numerous clients around the country that we provide phone support for. Sometimes phone support gets a little tricky, so thats why all the computers have PC anywhere installed. The problem with pc anywhere is that most of these sites are now on some form of broadband and have eliminated their modem lines, and setting up firewalls/routers to allow pc anywhere to communicate is a royal pain.

Enter Webex. It’s an online meeting collaboration system thats loaded with features, but theres only one feature we’re interested in, desktop sharing. It allows us to have full control of the desktop over the internet just like pc anywhere but without headaches.

We’ve been using it quite a bit lately and I’d say it’s been a great service. If you’ve ever done phone support, you know how frustrating it can get talking to a ‘non-computer-literate’ person. This eliminates all that stress too.

Closed minded web developers

I was speaking with a guy who’s developing a website for one of our clients today because I wanted to bring to his attention a small formatting problem that shows up for me in Mozilla and Firebird. The site did look fine in IE. Keep in mind that problem is only minor, but his response to me was, ‘Why should I change anything when 95% of the population uses IE. The user should change their browser’.

Man I hate that. That’s second time I’ve ran into basically the same statement from a web guy.

Is it really that hard to code to standards? He’s using Dreamweaver, so is it Dreamweavers fault?

Bottom-line, after I explained how the client uses Mozilla as his main browser since I showed them how cool it is, the web guy changed his tone and said he would fix the formatting problem.

Best cajun chicken sandwich ever

I was in downtown Chicago today and I decided to try some place new for lunch today. Since I was in a section of town I don’t get to very often, there were plenty of choices. I decided on a place called SRO “Standing Room Only”. I got the cajun chicken sandwich, and in case you couldn’t tell from the subject, this thing was great.

Blogs tainting search results

Yup, it’s true. Do a search for lime disease and what do you see just a few results down from the top? Yup, this site. Why? This site doesn’t have anything to do with lime ‘lyme’ disease.

Well I was recently crawled by googlebot and my random site title at the had the word lime disease in it.

So sorry to the folks, and there’s lot of them, who came here looking for info on lime disease. Check here instead.

The wireless void that is central Wisconsin

For my little roadtrip this past weekend I had netstumbler running on my way up and on the way back. Grand total was 150 access points discovered. That number was lower than expected since I drove through Milwaukee and past Madison. As you can see from the picture below there were many stretches without any wireless activity. I guess there’s not much need for Wi-Fi on the potato farms of central Wisconsin. The red arrow in the upper left indicate my final destination and my starting point was in the lower right.
